Announcing fburgnews.com
By Head Fred • Jun 12th, 2008 • Category: local news
The idea for fburgnews.com circled around my brain for awhile. I finally took advantage of a free weekend and banged it out.
Fredericksburg needs a greater diversity of media coverage, so hopefully by consolidating all of it (or what little there is) will help.
Additionally, I want to line up bloggers and others to contribute to the original content part (thanks Bryan!) to allow more voices to be heard. It’s not my site, I just want to push the snowball down the hill and see what happens.
The inclusion of local blogs and the RSS feed from local media is designed to allow readers to experience not just a diversity of news but different types of media as well.
There are a few kinks still to be worked out… it needs more contributors, it needs a working weather station at Fredericksburg (we’ve been stuck at 77 degrees for a week), and it needs suggestions.
Thoughts?
Awesome Concept! Congratulations.
Beware of FLS.. they won’t like this…
seriously….. go for it!
you’ll need contributors and they’ll need journalistic ethics with respect to facts and reporting…
and this is a tremendous opportunity to get deeper into some stories than traditional media can afford
but it will obviously depend on who can take the time to delve into stories ..deeper.. for no money..

FLS, BTW, already beat you to the idea of commenting on articles.
Most of the articles in FLS, as I’m sure you are aware, allow a public discussion…
Larry, thank you. It’s just a beginning, but it’s exciting. Want to be a regular contributor?
The FLS has made great strides with FredTalk and comments, which I believe is why it took so long for local bloggers to get going and get semi-organized. No one can compete with them on their same level - but hopefully we can round out their coverage from differing angles, sources, and viewpoints.
Although FredTalk is good at what it does, the posts on fburgnews are not annonymous, which I believe adds a little bit of ownership and editorial professionalism.
PS, wunderground has a list of online weather stations in the area
http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/ListStations.asp?selectedState=VA&selectedCountry=United+States
could always use their “Weather Sticker” instead of a widget for displaying area weather.
Yeah, I like wunderground, but not their stickers… I think I’m going to ride it out for another week and see if the National Weather Service will actually fix the station. We’ll see though… thanks!
